Flourish Counseling, LLC

Providing a safe, quiet, non-judgmental, space for all ages to find compassion, healing, and peace

Feeling Overwhelmed?

At Flourish Counseling, I understand that the journey to mental well-being is the key to happiness and health. And because you’re reading this, I know that you, or someone very special to you, is hurting. I faced a similar point in my life that you may be facing as well. I was in my mid 30's before I became aware of how trauma from my childhood was affecting my choices, my relationships, and my happiness, all in very negative ways. Until then I was completely unaware that constant verbal abuse, physical threats, and simply living with a parent with a serious substance use disorder had wired my brain to react in certain ways.

Since then I have come to realize that many people, who are living with similar symptoms and behavior patterns, also grew up in violent and/or abusive homes. Do you find yourself always apologizing for things you didn't do? Are you a people-pleaser? Do you often find yourself in relationships that are volatile or don't last? You may be experiencing symptoms of unresolved trauma. If you feel like this is you, click the link below and schedule an appointment today. The good news is, regardless of age, the plasticity of the brain allows us to change! Don't delay. Pursue your happiness!

Because I come to counseling with a trauma-informed approach, I don't begin by trying to find out what's wrong with you. Rather, I begin by asking, what happened to you? A trauma-informed approach prioritizes safety, empowerment, and collaboration. I recognize that trauma can have profound and lasting effects on an individual's mental, emotional, and physical well-being. My approach takes into account the widespread prevalence of trauma and its potential impact, allowing me to create a more compassionate and understanding therapeutic relationship.

About

My Story

My name is Mark Mathews, MA, LGPC, NCC and I am the director and primary therapist for Flourish Counseling. I have a passion for helping others. I am a graduate of Wake Forest University with a Master’s degree (M.A.) in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. My own personal story, life experience, and education have drawn me to an interest in how trauma and toxic stress negatively affect our lives. As a survivor of complex trauma myself, I understand the impact that living in fear can have on the brain and how that same fear can manifest itself later in life in a variety of ways; substance use disorders, people pleasing traits, negative inner-critic, and inability to form or maintain relationships. All of these, and more, can steal our happiness and keep us anxious and depressed.

My approach to therapy is simple. I don't try to figure out if there is something wrong with you. Rather, I want to know all that has happened to you. This is where you will find the answers to healing. If you have unhealed trauma that is causing disruptions in your life and you're ready to begin a journey of healing, I am happy to walk that road with you. Give me a call today.
